## If x=6 is the only x-intercept of the graph of a quadratic equation, which statement best describes the discriminant of the equation?

If x=6 is the only intercept, it means that the quadratic is tangential to the x-axis, or equivalently x=6 is a root with multiplicity 2.
The discriminant is typically zero for multiplicity 2 in a quadratic.
It will be clear looking at the quadratic formula:
if D=b^2-4ac = discriminant of the quadratic, then
x1=(-b+sqrt(D))/2a or x2=(-b-sqrt(D))/2a
if x1=x2 (double root, or multiplicity 2) then clearly D has to be zero.

## E. solid copper sulfide and silver nitrate react to form copper (ii) nitrate and solid silver sulfide. write a balanced chemical equation that describes the reaction. identify the oxidation number of each element in the reaction. (you do not need to include the total contribution of charge.) is this reaction a redox reaction or a non-redox reaction? explain your answer.

The given reaction is not a redox reaction.

Explanation:

Redox reaction is defined as chemical reaction in oxidation and reduction reactions occurs simultaneously.

Oxidation reaction is defined as the reaction in which an atom looses its electrons. Here, oxidation state of the atom increases.

Reduction reaction is defined as the reaction in which an atom gains electrons. Here, oxidation state of the atom decreases.

Solid copper sulfide when immersed in silver nitrate solution it reacts to form silver sulfide precipitate and copper(II) nitrate solution.

Oxidation states of elements on reactant side:

Oxidation state of copper  = +2

Oxidation state of sulfur = -2

Oxidation number of silver  +1

Oxidation number of nitrogen = +5

Oxidation number of oxygen = -2

Oxidation states of elements on product side:

Oxidation state of copper  = +2

Oxidation state of sulfur = -2

Oxidation number of silver  +1

Oxidation number of nitrogen = +5

Oxidation number of oxygen = -2

No change in oxidation states of elements is observed which means that the given reaction is not a redox reaction.

## Read the excerpt from “A Simple Way to Create Suspense”. For instance, heading toward a movie review program, I remember we asked: Who was the studio’s first choice for the Harry Callahan role in “Dirty Harry”? We knew most viewers would be intrigued. (What, Clint Eastwood wasn’t the first choice?) But—and this was the lesson—the success of the tactic didn’t depend on intrigue. Even viewers with no interest at all stuck around to find out. Humans are hard-wired. They need to know. Even viewers who knew the answer for sure stuck around, in order to be gratified. The gap was bridged, and the danger averted. (It was Frank Sinatra. You waited, right?) Which best describes this excerpt? The central idea of this excerpt is that Clint Eastwood was not the original choice for the Dirty Harry movie. The central idea of this excerpt is that intrigue is the most important way to create suspense. The author uses an analogy to compare his readers to the characters of a Hollywood movie. The author uses a personal anecdote to show that audiences are willing to wait for an answer.

The option that best describes this excerpt is The author uses a personal anecdote to show that audiences are willing to wait for an answer.

Explanation:

At the beginning of the story he puts himself as part of a group and says “heading toward a movie review program, I remember we asked” … a moment of suspense is presented in that precise second with that question, it is mentioned that all people were expectantly waiting for the answer and waited until they heard it, during the process of suspense and expectation that also the reader lived at the end is trough a sentence that even the reader notices that all of us wait for an answer to an enigma no matter what.

## Which of the following best describes the 1957 events at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas? Governor Faubus resisted the school’s integration with National Guard troops, and President Eisenhower sent federal troops to enforce integration. Under Governor Faubus, Little Rock police first fought, then enforced, the order to integrate the school. President Eisenhower sent National Guard troops to resist the school’s integration, but Governor Faubus obtained a court order to dismiss them. President Eisenhower and Governor Faubus worked together to make the integration process run as smoothly as possible.

The correct answer is  Governor Faubus resisted the school’s integration with National Guard troops, and President Eisenhower sent federal troops to enforce integration.

After the Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) the federal government called for the desegregation of schools all across America. This included Central High School. Central High School was previously an all white school. After Brown vs. Board of Education ruled segregated schools illegal, 9 black students enrolled at Central High School. These individuals would be known as the Little Rock 9.

After enrolling, these students tried to attend Central High School but were kept out by the national guard troops. This was due to Governor Fabius’s disagreement with integrating white and black schools. However, President Eisenhower enforced the federal ruling by sending in federal troops to enforce the new ruling, allowing black and white students to attend the same school.

## Marie Tyndall is a student in the Jackson Heights Community College Medical Assisting Program. She and two other classmates have been assigned the project of creating a plan for cleaning up spills that might occur in the classroom laboratory and ensuring that all students using the laboratory have been trained in the proper procedure. Questions: 1.What materials would her group need? Describes these materials and how they would be used. 2. How would her group go about learning the proper steps in the clean-up process? 3. How would her group ensure that all other students in the laboratory also have the proper training?

1. The group of students will need a computer and printer, and the most necessary part is to follow the rules of the OSHA regulations for cleaning up spills. At first they should design the procedure and its structure. Then they have to create a checklist of students that must receive the training. The students can elaborate their work by creating a PowerPoint presentation as it is very convenient for a group working. The students can divide into groups  to divide their responsibilities and each group would need a prepackaged spill clean-up kit or supplies to create their own kit, a three-ring binder, a few tabs for the binder and access to the OSHA  regulations on the computers.
2. The way how the group can go about learning the proper steps in the clean-up process is to study the needed information in the textbook. They also can make a small research using the Internet but the most important step is to interview medical personnel in a local medical laboratory in order to make sure that the information that was taken from web is actually useful.
3. The way how the group can ensure that all other students in the laboratory also have the proper training is to create a check-off document which will make sure that all the steps are followed properly. At the end of the procedure, the leader of the group must ask the students to show how they  clean up a spill to check whether all the students understood the information.

## What best describes tactics used by the Arab Empire when it captured a region?A) The conquerors used Visigoth mercenaries to maintain order.B) The conquerors forced the populace to convert Islam.C) The conquerors used the region’s existing leaders as governors to collect taxes.D) The conquerors forced the populace to convert to Orthodox Christianity

B) The conquerors forced the populace to convert Islam.

Explanation:

Muslim expansion or the expansion of Islam began in the Arabian peninsula in southwestern Asia. It is the denomination that usually occurs to the military conquests or the trade reforms of the Arab Muslim civilization in which the Sassanid Empire, North Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula, including parts of the Byzantine Empire, would fall. Also included in this denomination is the influx of merchants in the Maghreb and in Africa, and missions made in the Philippines.

During the following centuries, Islam achieved several advances in other fronts, as in the rest of Central Asia, in Asia Minor, in southern Italy, in Eastern Europe, in Southeast Asia and in sub-Saharan Africa. However, all these advances were produced by different States independent of each other. While these advances were taking place, Islam was forced to retreat in Western Europe, especially by the so-called Spanish Reconquista. In the last third of the sixteenth century, a last Muslim state with universal pretensions, the Ottoman Empire, reached its maximum expansion.
