The case coming on for a hearing before the Supreme Court, that court was of opinion that the law under which the prosecution had was constitutional, and denied the relief prayed for by the petitioner. Ex parte Plessy, 45 La.Ann. 80. Whereupon petitioner prayed for a writ of error from this court, which was allowed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana. MR. JUSTICE BROWN, after stating the case, delivered the opinion of the court. This case turns upon the constitutionality of an act of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana, passed in 1890, providing for separate railway carriages for the white and colored races. Acts 1890, No. 111, p. 152. The first section of the statute enacts “that all railway companies carrying passengers in their coaches in this State shall provide equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races by providing two or more passenger coaches for each passenger train, or by dividing the passenger coaches by a partition so as to secure separate accommodations: Provided, That this section shall not be construed to apply to street railroads. No person or persons, shall be admitted to occupy seats in coaches other than the ones assigned to them on account of the race they belong to.” The Supreme Court’s ruling in Plessy v. What are the ethical concerns regarding stem cell research? Briefly describe each side of the debate. What is your opinion about stem cell research

[ad_1]

Stem cells research is very Unethical. Cloning anything whenever at any age to make an exact replica gives way for mutations. Meaning someone could have to suffer there whole life, without an eye, without a limb, and these things can happen in real life you don’t just have to be born mutated. If you get cancer in a limb sure they might have to amputate but what if someone is born with a third arm? One eye in the middle of there forehead? Gods creations are his own and we are practically trying to replicate his power. How do you think He will take that? Doesn’t anyone remember the Tower of Babel? Aren’t we supposed to learn from our ancestors mistakes? These are just a few things to give you to think about. Hope this helps 🙂

If a Supreme Court Justice disagrees with the decision of the court, he/she may write a.A. new lawB. Letter to the president C.Concurring opinion D.dissening opinion

[ad_1]

1- The correct answer is B, as one result of the Great Society was that the lives of many underprivileged Americans improved.

The Great Society was a set of US national reform programs announced by President Lyndon B. Johnson for the first time in a speech at Ohio University on May 7, 1964 and more fully illustrated on May 22, 1964 at the University of Michigan. These reform programs were subsequently presented to the Congress of the United States and largely approved during the 1960s, thanks to the consent of its supporters of the Democratic Party.

Two main goals of social reforms were the elimination of poverty and racial injustice. During this period new large spending programs were launched in the fields of education, medical care, urban problems and transport. Johnson’s “Great Society” was linked, in its objectives and policies, to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal program.

Some proposals of the Great Society resumed initiatives contained in the New Frontier program, interrupted by the tragic death of President John F. Kennedy. Johnson’s success in promoting and endorsing his reforms depended on his considerable congressional political influence, his persuasion, and the favorable historical circumstances resulting from the 1964 presidential elections, which allowed the Democratic Party to dominate Congress and to elect the House of Representatives with the largest number of exponents of the liberal current since 1938.

The evolution of the Vietnam war and the massive involvement of the American military machine in the conflict, however, partly undermined the success of the “Great Society” program. Growing, huge expenditures for the continuation of the war made more difficult to finance the reform programs. Representatives of the Democratic Party against the war in Vietnam complained that military spending decisively stifled the Great Society program. On the whole, however, despite growing political and economic difficulties, which forced the administration to eliminate or reduce the financing of some projects, President Johnson managed to activate a series of programs of great importance, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Older Americans Act and the federal education funding, which are still active.

2- The correct answer is C, as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was necessary because the previous existing American immigration policies were discriminatory.

On October 3, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the law into effect, saying: “The [old] system violates the basic principle of American democracy, the principle according to which the valuation and reward of each man should be established on the basis of his merits as a man. It has been anti-American in the highest sense, because it has been unfaithful to the faith that led thousands to these shores, even before we were a country. ”

There was a time when the Church was very powerful … In those days the Church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society. Wherever the early Christians entered a town the power structure got disturbed and immediately sought to convict them for being “disturbers of the peace” and “outside agitators.” Things are different now. The contemporary Church is so often a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. It is so often the arch-supporter of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the Church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the Church’s silent and often vocal sanction (approved action) of things as they are. What is the main idea of this paragraph?

To trek and travel and sail the seven seas.

In Spanish, the preterite tense (el pretérito) is used to describe actions completed at a point in the past. So the Spanish preterite is not used to describe regular or continuous actions in the past with no specific beginning or end. In that case, we use the imperfect. Therefore, we use the preterite to talk about completed actions in the past. So, it is used to talk about beginnings and ends, things that occurred on specific dates or days, at specific times or during specific time periods, and events in a sequence. There are two forms in this verbal tense, namely: Regular Imperfect Forms and Irregular Imperfect Forms.

On the other hand, the imperfect tense (el imperfecto) is used to describe past habitual actions or to talk about what someone was doing when they were interrupted by something else. In general, the imperfect is used to talk about past actions, conditions, or events that occurred regularly or frequently or that were in progress in a moment in the past. It is also used to tell time, talk about dates, give a person’s age, and describe features, conditions, and feelings in the past. As in the preterite tense, there are two forms in this verbal tense, namely: Regular Imperfect Forms and Irregular Imperfect Forms.

The regular verb forms for both the preterite and the imperfect are given in three ways, that is, for ar, er and ir endings. So the conjugation will depend on the pronoun of the sentence and the verb ending. On the other hand, the irregular verb forms don’t have a defined structure.

Answer:

Henri Rousseau’s Portrait of a Woman

Explanation:

Magical Realism finds precedent in eighteenth-century Gothic novels, but also connects with sixteenth-century Baroque or Surrealism, almost contemporary in the early twentieth century.

Among the most striking features of this movement, we find the blend of realism with pure unreality that is observed as normal, with the integration of magical elements without seeming extraordinary.

These works do not explain the supernatural elements and are narrated as something natural, with characters unaware of their transcendent dimension. In addition, death has paramount value in the relativistic discourse of truth, with a metaphysical focus on space and time and an intimate atmosphere that blends characters with myths, legends, and natural cultures.

Henri Rousseau’s Portrait of a Woman is considered one of the first magical realistic stories.

What event shifted public opinion away from a laissez-faire view of government towards a more activist view?

[ad_1]

You didn’t provide answer choices, but the most likely answer is:

Explanation:

Thomas Hobbes pointed to the social contract as the source of a government’s authority, saying that a ruler got his power from the people over whom he ruled, not directly from God. But Hobbes’ argument still supported a strong monarch style of government for the sake of a country’s security and stability.  Whoever was put in charge of government needed to have absolute power, in his view.  Thomas Hobbes published his political theory in Leviathan  in 1651, following the chaos and destruction of the English Civil War.  He saw human beings as naturally suspicious of one another, in competition with each other, and evil toward one another as a result.  Forming a government meant giving up personal liberty, but gaining security against what would otherwise be a situation of every person at war with every other person.  So once the people gave power to a monarch, then that ruler needed to have absolute authority in order to maintain security and stability in the social order.

Well I live in Florida so; I can explain tourism has always had a large role in our history. During our development, tourism gave us the much needed boost in economy that we needed to get on our feet. People coming from all over to enjoy the oranges and warm sun and beaches was a large source of income for people all over. More people to boy products = a larger income. The ‘boom and bust’ is what im guessing was the time right before the stock market crashed. Americans were richer then ever, they took more vacations, they generally thought of themselves having a brighter economic future, which caused more spending, more vacations, more extravagance. This made Florida truly flourish for a time, becoming a hotspot for wealthy vacation homes. The Great Depression almost killed us.. many buisness owners had come to depend on tourism to make a living wage, but since the great depression loomed over everyone, no one took vacations. No one had extra money to spend. Many of those wealthy vacation homes went into foreclosure. The Floridian Economy tanked during this time, so bad we even feel ripple effects of it today, even though we have built up so much more.

However, they also point out that it’s OK to have an unusual kind of family structure. On One Tree Hill, for example, Lucas is being raised by a single mom, and he has a close relationship with his uncle, but his dad isn’t completely out of the picture. On a teen show such as iCarly, on Nick, Carly’s older brother plays the role of guardian, because her dad is in the Air Force. Her mom is never really spoken of.

2. I do feel that most of the portrayal of family is accurate, on TV. Modern shows have steered away from the conventional “Mom, Dad, 2.5 kids plus dog” formula, which is accurate, because not all TV watchers are fortunate enough to have that kind of situation. See above answer for specific examples.

3. I think that a definite negative theme in today’s modern shows, revolve around views on alcohol and drugs. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own views, but more often than not, after a character drinks, or does something they shouldn’t, they panic about what their parents will do once they find out. This panic may lead them to increasingly dangerous situations. For example, in OTH, Nathan is drinking, and then goes out to drive his girlfriend’s car. When he crashes it into another car, he realizes the trouble he is in, and leaves the scene of the accident; thus potentially getting him in even more trouble. I realize that TV is in no way an accurate depiction of all life aspects, and it is “only TV”, but I think Nathan should have faced the consequences right away, because by running from the scene, he only put himself in danger of being caught, or arrested. Again, though, I’m reading too much into it.

[ad_1]

Answer:Leo Tolstoy wrote the novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich to criticize the emerging middle class of modern Russia in the nineteenth century. Ivan Ilyich, his family, and his friends are part of this budding middle class. Tolstoy’s aim in writing this novella was to criticize the thoughts and the approach of middle class people toward their families, their jobs, and society. He used the life of Ivan Ilyich to demonstrate all the aspects of the middle class that he believed were wrong. Tolstoy portrays Ivan Ilyich as a man whose life decisions are based on social acceptance. He chooses his friends and even his wife based on their social standing. When he starts to find his family life unpleasant because of his wife’s constant nagging, he limits his interactions with the whole family. Instead, he seeks comfort in his work. He assumes a formal relationship with his family members, particularly his wife. This change in his feelings and attitude toward his family does not seem strange to him. On the contrary, getting away from his family becomes his life goal:

This aloofness might have grieved Ivan Ilyich had he considered that it ought not to exist, but he now regarded the position as normal, and even made it the goal at which he aimed in family life.

Tolstoy deplored the middle-class habit of maintaining distance with family members in private but keeping up appearances of closeness for the public. Tolstoy shows his character Ivan Ilyich making the effort to maintain this detachment from his family members while ensuring that his family appears on the outside to be a regular and happy family. Even when he has to be at home with his family, he makes sure that they have guests. That way, he can avoid confrontations or meaningful discussions with his family:

His aim was to free himself more and more from those unpleasantnesses and to give them a semblance of harmlessness and propriety. He attained this by spending less and less time with his family, and when obliged to be at home he tried to safeguard his position by the presence of outsiders.

Ilyich’s work soon becomes an obsession, and everything else, including his family is secondary to his job:

The chief thing however was that he had his official duties. The whole interest of his life now centered in the official world and that interest absorbed him.

Through Ivan Ilyich, Tolstoy portrayed a class of people who make determined efforts to escape human contact and suffering by seemingly living in denial. They are people who run away from love and relationships, and they are unwilling to reflect on their lives. Instead, they choose to exist in their self-centered world until they are jolted into reality. In Ivan Ilyich’s case, this jolt comes in the form of his illness in chapter 4.

Tolstoy would not have agreed with Ivan Ilyich’s priorities. Unlike Ivan, Tolstoy looked inward throughout his adult life. He searched for a deeper meaning and purpose, especially in regard to his political and religious ideals. While those ideals eventually caused Tolstoy to avoid his wife, he generally had a close relationship with his family. By all accounts, he seemed very much a man who loved and cherished his wife and their 10 children. While Tolstoy was dedicated to his writing, his family seemed to inspire him, rather than get in the way of his literary genius. His wife was involved in his work, having transcribed most of his writing. Even Tolstoy’s last days were spent on a pilgrimage that he embarked on with his youngest daughter.

For some people, global warming is a myth. For people familiar with the facts, it is no myth. It is hard truth that demands hard answers.
Over the past 50 years or so, automobiles, factories, and power plants have poured many thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is whats called ” a greenhouse gas .” It traps the suns radiation and increases the global temperature. During the past two decades, we have seen some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded. Also, the hottest summers have happened in the past five years. Unusual weather patterns have soaked some parts of the United States with rain. Meanwhile, the western states are fighting over water as lakes and rivers are drying up. Most shocking of all is the steady melting of the Arctic ice caps. Ice depths that were 300 feet are now closer to 100 feet. Ice has retreated northward into the Arctic Sea for hundreds of miles.
What can we conclude from all this ? The answer seems to depend on your point of view. Senator Mike Blevins was quoted as saying, ” Global warming is an unproved theory. We can’t afford environmental regulations that hurt the economy.” Expressing a different opinion, Senator Morton Giles commented, ” We’ve made a bargain with Satan. We’re trading short-term profits for the misery of future generations.” As arguments rage over the reality of global warming, most scientists agree on the following : global temperatures are rising, ocean temperatures are increasing, and climate patterns have been altered. Many scientists also feel there’s a real threat of sea levels rising as the polar ice caps melt.
What can we do to control global warming ? Proposals include the following : improve automobile mileage, develop alternative energy sources, and reduce American dependence on foreign oil.

However, the reason after every option for its acceptance or nonacceptance as the answer is mentioned beneath each point. Anyhow, the correct answer is darkened.

A. “When she … lived there.”

This line only defines a specific detail about how the special agent survived through a fake name as a spy. No theme is described through this sentence.

B. “Baissac’s goal … resistance groups.”

This statement the agent’s motive and the way she enacted the task provided. Still, the complete idea is not expressed within the line.

C. “Baissac did … her tasks.”

The writer is praising the efforts of Baissac in this sentence. He again writes how much hard work the agent did in order to achieve the national goals.

D. “As a … German troops.”

This is the statement that definitely defines the central idea of the excerpt. When we break this line into sections, we can see that it illustrates that she performed multiple essential tasks when appointed in Normandy. The phrase “sometimes dangerous tasks” describes the critical nature of the job she handled in there. And, also the opposition (German troops) is clearly mentioned in this sentence which helps to convey the idea very clearly.
