Read the following excerpt taken from the US Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). The case coming on for a hearing before the Supreme Court, that court was of opinion that the law under which the prosecution had was constitutional, and denied the relief prayed for by the petitioner. Ex parte Plessy, 45 La.Ann. 80. Whereupon petitioner prayed for a writ of error from this court, which was allowed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana. MR. JUSTICE BROWN, after stating the case, delivered the opinion of the court. This case turns upon the constitutionality of an act of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana, passed in 1890, providing for separate railway carriages for the white and colored races. Acts 1890, No. 111, p. 152. The first section of the statute enacts “that all railway companies carrying passengers in their coaches in this State shall provide equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races by providing two or more passenger coaches for each passenger train, or by dividing the passenger coaches by a partition so as to secure separate accommodations: Provided, That this section shall not be construed to apply to street railroads. No person or persons, shall be admitted to occupy seats in coaches other than the ones assigned to them on account of the race they belong to.” The Supreme Court’s ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson was problematic because

In the Plessy v. Ferguson case, the Supreme Court’s ruling of the “separate but equal” law being constitutional was problematic because the “separate but equal” law accepted segregation and the discrimination that were against blacks.

Read the excerpt from the US Supreme court case Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). The statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c. 111, requiring railway companies carrying passengers in their coaches in that State, to provide equal, but separate, accommodations for the white and colored races, by providing two or more passenger coaches for each passenger train, or by dividing the passenger coaches by a partition so as to secure separate accommodations; and providing that no person shall be permitted to occupy seats in coaches other than the ones assigned to them, on account of the race they belong to; and requiring the officer of the passenger train to assign each passenger to the coach or compartment assigned for the race to which he or she belong; and imposing fines or imprisonment upon passengers insisting on going into a coach or compartment other than the one set aide for the race to which he or she belongs; and conferring upon officers of the train power to refuse to carry on the train passengers refusing to occupy the coach or compartment assigned to them, and exempting the railway company from liability for such refusal, are not in conflict with the provisions either of the Thirteenth Amendment or of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Which best explains why the Supreme Court’s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson was unconstitutional? The Supreme Court’s ruling allowed states to deny equal protection to any person within its jurisdiction. Since the 14th Amendment did not make concessions for people born outside the US, the Supreme Court’s decision could not be applied. The Supreme Court’s decision gave individual states the freedom to make their own laws in relation to non-whites. Since segregation laws did not provide equal protections or liberties to non-whites, the ruling was not consistent with the 14th Amendment.

Hey there!

Correct answer is D. Comma or Period Inside Rule

A. Question mark or exclamation point inside: those are not really necessary.

B. Colon or semicolon: not, a semicolon would divide the whole sentence and it would be shorten; a colon would work but after requested, when there is already a comma.

C. Question mark or Exclamation Point Outside Rule: would not work, becase it is an very polite and affirmative sentence.

D: A comma or period inside rule: actually, just a comma would work. Please, Cooper’s dad requested, go… Cooper’s dad requested must be in between commas as it is a vocative.

Hope this helps

A car moving at 10 m/s crashes into a tree and stops in 0.26 s. calculate the force the seat belt exerts on a passenger in the car to bring him to a halt. the mass of the passenger is 70 kg

[ad_1]

The gravitational force Fg between two objects is given by the equation:

Fg=(G*m₁*m₂)/r₂, where G=6.67*10^-11 m³ kg⁻¹ s⁻² is the gravitational constant, m₁ and m₂ are the masses of the two bodies and r is the distance between those bodies.

Due to the gravitational attraction the pencil and the eraser will attract if we there is no friction on the surface.

m₁=10 g=0.01 kg is the mass of the pencil
m₂=20 g=0.02 kg is the mass of the eraser
r=2.5 cm = 0.025 m

First we calculate the Fg:

Fg={(6.67*10^-11)*0.01*0.02}/(0.025²)=2.1344*10^-11 N

To get the velocity v of the pencil:

v²=2as, where a is the acceleration of the pencil and s is the path. In our case s=r so we can write:

v²=2ar

a=Fg/m₁= 2.133*10^-9 m/s²

v²=2*(2.133*10^-9)*0.025=1.0665*10^-10

v=√(1.0665*10^-10)=1.0327*10^-5 m/s

We have the velocity and the acceleration, so we can calculate the time t with the equation:

t=v/a=(1.0327*10^-5)/(2.133*10^-9)=4841.6 s

1 hour has 3600 s so when we divide time t in seconds by 3600 we get time T in hours:

T=t/3600=4841.6/3600=1.3449 h.

So the time for the pencil and eraser to touch is T=1.3449 hours.

Also time T can be expressed like T= 1h and 20 mins and 41.64 s

March 4, 1933, was perhaps the Great Depression’s darkest hour. The stock market had plunged 85% from its high in 1929, and nearly one-fourth of the workforce was unemployed. In the cities, jobless men were lining up for soup and bread. In rural areas, farmers whose land was being foreclosed were talking openly of revolution. The crowd that gathered in front of the Capitol that day to watch Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Inauguration had all but given up on America. They were, a reporter observed, “as silent as a group of mourners around a grave.”
Roosevelt’s Inaugural Address was a pitch-perfect combination of optimism (“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”), consolation (the nation’s problems “concern, thank God, only material things”) and resolve (“This nation asks for action, and action now”). The speech won rave reviews. Even the rock-ribbed Republican Chicago Tribune lauded its “dominant note of courageous confidence.” F.D.R. had buoyed the spirits of the American people — and nearly 500,000 of them wrote to him at the White House in the following week to tell him so.
Hours after the Inauguration, Roosevelt made history in a more behind-the-scenes way. He gathered his Cabinet in his White House office and had Justice Benjamin Cardozo swear them in as a group, the first time that had ever been done. F.D.R. joked that he was doing it so they could “receive an extra day’s pay,” but the real reason was that he wanted his team to get to work immediately.
And that team came through brilliantly. In the next 100 days — O.K., 105, but who’s counting? — his Administration shepherded 15 major bills through Congress. It was the most intense period of lawmaking ever undertaken by Congress — a “presidential barrage of ideas and programs,” historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. observed, “unlike anything known to American history.”

I need to know if my paper is in order and is grammatically correct. Symbolism, 1the use of symbols to invest things with a representative meaning or to represent something abstract by something concrete, is used in novels and stories by authors worldwide. Why do authors choose symbolism? Symbolism is a unique style of literature that allows authors to express themselves indirectly on delicate or controversial matters through the use of symbols. These symbols can range from a variety of things and have various meanings. But one unique author, Cynthia Ozick, took symbolism to another level in her short story “The Shawl”. She uses, as you already guessed by the title, a shawl, to symbolize life and death. But the unique part is that the symbolism of the shawl changes with each character and has an effect on the other characters. The characters used are Magda, Stella, and Rosa. The first character Ozick uses to convey the symbolization of the shawl is Magda. Magda is a small infant with “eyes blue as air” and “smooth feathers of hair nearly as yellow as the Star sewn into Rosa’s coat.” With Magda the shawl symbolizes life. We can see this in this excerpt. “It was a magic shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three nights. Magda did not die, she stayed alive, although very quiet.” Ozick uses the shawl as a kind of shield to keep Magda alive longer then what either Rosa or Stella expected. However the shawl did not only keep Magda alive it also affected Stella by making her jealous. “Sometimes Stella carried Magda. But she was jealous of Magda. A thin girl of fourteen, too small, with thin breast of her own, Stella wanted to be wrapped in the shawl, hidden away, asleep, rocked by the march, a baby, a round infant in arms. ” This affected Stella to a point where she took the shawl away from Magda, virtually causing Magda to die. The next character Ozick uses to convey the symbolism of the shawl is Stella. Stella is a thin, small fourteen year old who is jealous of Magda. Her jealousness, caused by the wanting of the shawl from Magda, causes her to steal the shawl. Although intended for warmth, the shawl, in all, made Stella cold-hearted. “Then Stella took the shawl away and made Magda die. Afterward Stella said: “I was cold.” The cold went into her heart: Rosa saw that Stella’s heart was cold”. In reference to Stella’s coldness, the first sentence in the first paragraph is a sort of foreshadow to this event. When the shawl is with Stella it affects Rosa by making her Angry. It also affects Magda by bringer her out into the open. The third and final character Ozick uses to convey the symbolization of the shawl is Rosa. Rosa is the mother of Stella and Magda and is as light as “air”. In the hands of Rosa the shawl symbolizes comfort. “So she took Magda’s shawl and she filled her own mouth with it, stuffed it in and stuffed it in, until she was swallowing up the wolf’s screech and tasting the cinnamon and almond depth of Magda’s saliva; and Rosa drank Magda’s shawl until it was dried.” Rosa used the shawl to keep from screaming out in her pain after seeing Magda killed by the Nazi soldier. Because Rosa is the last character mentioned in the story, when she has the shawl it doesn’t affect any other character. In conclusion, Ozick’s “The Shawl” is a very deep and saddening story. Through the use of symbolization Ozick not only affects the character that has the shawl but also the other characters in the story. Without the symbolic meanings the shawl would mean nothing. For example, Magda would have just been a baby wrapped in a blanket. But Ozick gave the shawl a meaning, a life preserver. Now the scene is completely different. Magda is now a baby wrapped in a shawl only able to survive by the protection of the shawl. And it now affects the character Stella by making her jealous of Magda. With the symbolic meanings of the shawl the story now vivid and has a clearer meaning.

How does the personification of hunger in these sentences help readers to better understand Sanger Rainsford’s conflict with himself (character versus self) in the story?

The excerpt tells readers that hunger was tormenting Rainsford by picking at him, like a person might. This use of personification helps to show readers the intensity of Rainsford’s hunger. It also highlights the internal conflict between his hunger and his desire for adventure. We know that he swam for a long time and fell into a deep slumber. He’s now starving but also feeling invigorated. As the story says, “He looks about him, almost cheerfully.” He even gets around and examines the place and finds signs of a struggle that had happened in the vicinity. His intense hunger is in conflict with his urge for adventure. Yet he retains the ability to think clearly and logically: “Where there are pistol shots, there are men. Where there are men, there is food.” Food becomes his priority over adventure, and he sets off to find food, eventually reaching Zaroff’s chateau.

Select the sentence that correctly uses commas in a non-restrictive phrase. A A river, that is polluted, is unsafe for swimming. B Polluted rivers, which can exist anywhere, are unsafe for swimming. C When a river becomes polluted, it is no longer safe for swimming. D However, rivers sometimes become polluted when nearby farms use too many poisons.

Answer:

Your answer would be B.

Explanation:

The sentence that correctly uses commas in a non-restrictive phrase is sentence B. This sentence contains the nonessential relative clause which can exist anywhere.

Relative clauses, also called adjectival clauses, function as adjectives. They add description to the sentence; they modify nouns mainly. In this case, the clause modifies the noun rivers. Moreover, the clause is non-restrictive because the information it provides is not considered essential to complete the meaning of the sentence. That is, if the clause was dropped, the meaning of the sentence would be left unchanged (see 1).  For this reason, the clause is also offset with commas.

1) Polluted rivers are unsafe for swimming

Which of the following details from Animal Farm gives an example of irony? A) The Seven Commandments of Animal Farm are reduced to one very simplified maxim. B) The animals revolt against Mr. Jones but are ultimately repressed by corrupt leaders. C) Squealer convinces the other animals that the pigs should have all of the farm’s milk and apples. D) When Snowball suggests that Animal Farm needs a windmill, Napoleon signals his dogs to attack him.

Answer: B) The animals revolt against Mr. Jones but are ultimately repressed by corrupt leaders.

Irony occurs when a situation that appears to be something on the surface is in fact the complete opposite in reality. In this case, the animals revolt against Mr. Jones, thinking he is an oppressor, and follow the pigs, thinking they are fair, democratic leaders. However, in reality, the pigs end up being equally, if not more, corrupt and oppressive than the humans.

Which of these sentences uses correct parallel structure?

Before starting college, Jake learned how to speak Spanish and traveled across South

Parallelism is using the same grammatical structure in a series of phrases or sentences. It is used to help with clarity and can provide emphasis. The only sentence with correct parallel structure is the last one, but even it is not complete. The first sentence is not parallel because the verbs “walks” and “is taking” are not in the same form. The sentence should read “…Sheila either walks home or takes a bus.” The second sentence is also not parallel because the verbs “does” and “took” do not have the same structure. The sentence should be “…Jenny does her homework and then takes her dog…”. The third sentence is also wrong because the verbs “read” and “watched” have the same structure, but “was playing” does not. The sentence should be “…Shane read a book, watched a movie, and played…”.
