## Why is an ecosystem’s net primary production (NPP) lower than its gross primary production (GPP)? A.NPP reflects the loss of matter due to respiration by the primary producers. B.NPP reflects the gain of oxygen due to respiration by the primary producers. C.GPP reflects the loss of matter due to respiration by the primary producers.

Hi. I think it would be A. Heres how NPP and GPP work:

NPP stands for net primary productivity and GPP means gross primary productivity. GPP is basically the entire amount that an ecosystem or area has. NPP is the amount minus the amount lost to the environment. You might already know that as you go up the food chain energy is lost in respiration and doesn’t get absorbed by the thing that eats it. Therefore, the NPP=GPP-lost energy.

## What is an example of a negative incentive for producers

14. E 2.0 m/s^2

Initially, a 20 N force is applied to the block, so it has an acceleration of 3.9 m/s^2. According to Newton’s law, the mass of the block is:

In the second situation, a force of 10 N is applied to the block. Since the mass is still the same, the acceleration now is:

So, approximately 2.0 m/s^2.

15. C. 866 N at 78.1° counterclockwise to the x-axis

Resultant along the x- and y-axis:

Magnitude and direction of the resultant:

16. D. 1720 N

Since the sphere is suspended, it is in equilibrium, therefore the tension in the chain is equal to the weight of the sphere attached to it, therefore:

17. C. A

This arrangement generates the largest tension in the chain, because in all other arrangements the weight of the object is split between the two chains, while in this case all the weight is hold by one chain, therefore the tension in this case is larger.

18. Straight path

The gravity “holds” the planets keeping them in a circular orbit. If we remove gravity, the planets would continue in a straight path with constant speed, because now there are no more forces acting on it, so by inertia they will continue their uniform motion with constant speed.

19. B. 1.6 × 104 N

First we can find the deceleration of the car by using the SUVAT equation:

where v=0 m/s, u=2 m/s, and S=15 cm=0.15 m. Re-arranging, we have

And now we can calculate the average force exerted on the car, by using Newton’s second law:

(the negative sign means that the force’s direction is opposite to the motion of the car)

20. A. magnetism

Magnetism is part of the electromagnetic force, which is one of the fundamental forces which act also through empty space. All the other forces need some object in order to act.

21. E. 45 N

The magnitude of the force in link A is equal to the weight of the rod plus the weight of the lower block, therefore:

22. C. on Earth at sea level

The weight of the bowling ball is given by: , where m is the mass of the ball and g is the acceleration due to gravity. The value of g increases when moving from the Earth’s center to the Earth’s surface, then decreases when moving far from the surface, so the point where g is greatest is at sea level, where it is 9.81 m/s^2. On the surface of the Moon, g is much smaller (about 1/6 of the value on Earth).

23. A. 0.5 m/s2

The acceleration of the block is given by Newton’s second law:

24. D. Both forces are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

According to Newton’s third law: if an object A exerts a force on an object B, then object B exerts a force equal and opposite on object B. In this case, objects A and B are the bat and the baseball, therefore the two forces are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.

25. B. 2940 N

The mass of the boulder is equal to its weight divided by the acceleration of gravity (9.81 m/s^2):

So now we can calculate the force needed to accelerate the boulder to 12.0 m/s^2:

26. D. 32.2 N

The weight of the object on Mercury is given by:

## Which of the following statements is false? A. Less than 2% of the US population is currently engaged in agriculture. B.Arable land is very minimal in the United States. C Most urban residents of the US are not engaged in agriculture. D.The United States, India, and China are the world’s three leading agricultural producers.

The answer is C. In order to carefully control conditions and confirm or disconfirm a hypothesis about the causes of behavior, one must perform an experiment.

Explanation:

Experimental research allows the researcher to control all the variables in order to create the conditions that can confirm or disconfirm a hypothesis. This method aimes to establish a relation of causality between two variables, which means that one variable is generated and determined by the other; this is posible because all of the other variables that can influence it have been controlled.

When a researcher conducts a survey or engages in naturalistic observation, he can’t control the variables, therefore, he can only establish a correlation between two variables, but not of causality.

## Allstocks.com, a web seller that buys furniture, clothing, electronics, and more from a variety of producers at less-than-regular wholesale prices and then charges customers less than retail, is a(n) ________.

The Contribution Margin per unit (CM) can be calculated
from the difference of Selling Price per unit (SP) and Total Expenses per unit
(TE).

First, let’s calculate the value of SP:

SP = Sales / Units sold

SP = \$1,043,400 / 22,200 units sold

SP = \$47

Second, calculate all expenses:

Direct materials per unit = \$234,948 / 27,970 units
manufactured = \$8.4

Direct labor per unit = \$131,459 / 27,970 units
manufactured = \$4.7

Variable manufacturing overhead per unit = \$240,542 / 27,970
units manufactured = \$8.6

Variable selling expenses per unit = \$113,220 / 22,200
units sold = \$5.1

TE = \$26.8

Therefore the CM is:

CM = SP – TE

CM = \$47 – \$26.8

CM = \$20.2 per unit

When the Texan revolution broke out and the war for independence began in 1835, Goliad was seen as a solid military stronghold because there was an important military supply barracks in the Fort of the Bay, built by the former Spanish Army.

Goliad was located halfway between the port of Copano, to which the Mexican army sent by sea soldiers, ammunition, armament, garrisons destined for the Alamo de San Antonio de Béjar, which functioned as the main political center of Texas.

When Goliad was taken in the second battle of the war, this forced the Mexican army to send its provisions by land, which would severely hamper logistics and would be key in the capture of General Santa María and consequent conclusion of the conflict and declaration of Independence winning the Texas Army.

Hey there!

Correct answer is D. Comma or Period Inside Rule

A. Question mark or exclamation point inside: those are not really necessary.

B. Colon or semicolon: not, a semicolon would divide the whole sentence and it would be shorten; a colon would work but after requested, when there is already a comma.

C. Question mark or Exclamation Point Outside Rule: would not work, becase it is an very polite and affirmative sentence.

D: A comma or period inside rule: actually, just a comma would work. Please, Cooper’s dad requested, go… Cooper’s dad requested must be in between commas as it is a vocative.

Hope this helps

## Sugar plantations were the backbone of the European American Hawaiian economy. Sugar was also the main Hawaiian export to the United States. For many years, Hawaiian sugar was sold tariff-free in the United States. In 1890, the US Congress passed the McKinley Tariff Act Tariff Treaty of Nanjing Tariff Treaty of Kanagawa , which removed tariffs on all foreign sugar imports. This change meant that Hawaiian sugar producers had to compete with other nations in the US market.

The Reformation actually started after Columbus’s landing in North America.

Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 was forced on Spain and Portugal by the Pope. The Pope basically said that all lands in the New World belonged to Spain and all new non-Christian lands in the Eastern Hemisphere belong to Portugal. No other Catholic countries can do anything in those areas without the approval of the owner.

The pope basically drew two lines on the globe setting the border. The western line started at the north pole cut half way through Greenland and ended at the south pole. The new world was everything to the west. Problem is that it ran through a chunk of Brazil which is why Brazil is an ex-Portuguese colony.

The Eastern line starts at the North Pole runs through siberia, through the pacific just west of Japan, and cuts Australia in half. Of course, Australia hadn’t been discovered yet. Everything to the the east of this line is the new world.

Obviously, this treaty didn’t hold up well, but the reformation gave the protestant countries an excuse to explore the new world since they didn’t have to take orders from the Pope. Even so, France, a catholic country, ignored it too.

Really, the only country that was effected by the reformation in the exploration of the Americas was England. All the other countries, changed their religion once and then went to war with the nearest catholic country. Sweden became Lutheran and stayed that way. The Dutch Republic became Calvinists and stayed that way.

England kept switching. First it was Catholic. Then, Henry VIII made it protestant. Then, Henry’s daughter Mary I made it catholic again. Henry’s other daughter Elizabeth I (with the two hit movies) made it Protestant again.

Years latter, Oliver Cromwell over through the monarchy, executed the King Charles I, and established a Protestant fundamentalist religious military dictatorship. He outlawed drinking,smoking, gambling, theater, dirty books, sports, prostitution, and anything generally fun. He would have made Saudi Arabia proud. Basically, all you could do is work, pray, and die. Sex was allowed for creating children, but you couldn’t enjoy it.

When Cromwell died, the people of England said enough was enough and brought back the King. Charles II kicked out the fundamentalists and brought back drinking, smoking, gambling, dirty books, sports, prostitution, and having fun during sex. Incidentally, those were also all his hobbies.

This brings us to the famous Pilgrims. They were part of Cromwell’s crowd. They kept agitating a return to the no-fun policy. They annoyed everybody. They weren’t persecuted for practicing their religion, they were persecuted because they kept trying to force their religion on everyone else. Sort of like Southern Baptists.

Charles II was the most easy going monarch in British history. Do realize how annoying you have to be to get him to throw you out.

Charles’s brother James II was obsessed with turning Great Britain catholic again. After four years of trying, they kicked him and his followers out.

At a typical mountaintop removal mining site, a mining company starts by clear-cutting miles of hardwood forest and growth from the top of a mountain, destroying wildlife habitat and nesting sites for native and migratory birds. Next, the company drills hundreds of holes and packs them with powerful explosives to blast through rock and reduce the elevation of the mountain by as much as 800 feetToxic dust is carried towards human populations, causing significant negative health effects. Flooding and erosion often follows when heavy rains wash over the exposed ground.

Huge shovels clear the tailings, often dumping it into adjacent valleys where it buries streams, destroys more habitat, and sometimes contaminates community drinking water with heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

Appalachia is renown for its stream salamander diversity, and these amphibians are particularly hard hit by habitat destruction.

## ____________ use the Sun’s energy to make food. a. Decomposers c. Producers b. Consumers d. Herbivores

The correct answer to the question is : 1) The water in pot X has more kinetic energy than water in pot Y.

EXPLANATION:

As per the question, the temperature of pot X = 56 degree Fahrenheit.

The temperature of water pot Y  = 49 degree Fahrenheit.

We know that temperature is a measure of average kinetic energy of energy of a system. The system having more average kinetic energy must have at a greater temperature as compared to the system having low average kinetic energy.

The potential energy of a system has no role in case of temperature.

If the temperature of two systems are equal, it means the average kinetic energy of two systems are equal.

When we provide heat to a body, the average kinetic energy of a body increases. So, its temperature increases. When the substance undergoes phase change, the average kinetic energy of the body remains constant.That’s why the temperature remains constant as long as total substance is not converted into other state.

Hence, the correct statement is that water in pot X has more kinetic energy than water in pot Y.

## In addition to getting rid of dead animals and plants, what other helpful function do decomposers perform? They require chlorophyll and sunlight to perform their function. They build complex organic molecules from simple inorganic ones. They make glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. They recycle organic matter so it can be used by producers.

Explanation:

The term isoelectronic means same number of electrons.

Then you need to count the number of electrons in the given species NO₂⁻.

You have to count the number of electrons of N (nitrogen) atoms, the number of electrons of two O (oxygen) atoms, and the adjust for the negative charge of the ions.

The atomic number of N is 7, meaning that each atom has 7 protons and 7 electrons.

The atomic number of O is 8, meaning that each atom has 8 protons and 8 electrons.

The negative charge of the ion means that it has one extra electron, which is the responsible for the negative charge.

Therefore the total number of electrons of the ion NO₂⁻ is 7 + 2 (8) + 1 = 24.

Note that that 24 = 3 x 8, so 24 is the number of electrons in 3 atoms of oxygen.

The moleucle O₃ is an allotrope of the oxygen. (an allotrope is a a form of an element with different structure and physical properties in the same physical state).

Therefore, the allotrope of oxygen isoelectronic with NO₂⁻ is O₃ (ozone)
