Read the excerpt from “A Simple Way to Create Suspense”. For instance, heading toward a movie review program, I remember we asked: Who was the studio’s first choice for the Harry Callahan role in “Dirty Harry”? We knew most viewers would be intrigued. (What, Clint Eastwood wasn’t the first choice?) But—and this was the lesson—the success of the tactic didn’t depend on intrigue. Even viewers with no interest at all stuck around to find out. Humans are hard-wired. They need to know. Even viewers who knew the answer for sure stuck around, in order to be gratified. The gap was bridged, and the danger averted. (It was Frank Sinatra. You waited, right?) Which best describes this excerpt? The central idea of this excerpt is that Clint Eastwood was not the original choice for the Dirty Harry movie. The central idea of this excerpt is that intrigue is the most important way to create suspense. The author uses an analogy to compare his readers to the characters of a Hollywood movie. The author uses a personal anecdote to show that audiences are willing to wait for an answer.

Two presidential candidates in a televised debate were asked to state their qualifications. Candidate Barry Smithers replied, "I am well qualified for the position of president of this great land. I have worked hard to ensure that voters' concerns were heard, and their voice was unanimous: We need more jobs and a cleaner environment. I have a vision that this nation can come together to accomplish these goals." Candidate Joe O'Neal answered, "I have a record of experience that makes me well qualified for the role of president, as shown by my term as governor and my 20 years of service in the U.S. Senate. I voted for a bill that has created jobs by building and repairing public roads and buildings. I have voted to ensure cars were manufactured to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." Which of the candidates has presented a stronger demonstration of his or her qualifications, and why? Candidate Barry Smithers, because he listens to the concerns of voters, unlike his opponent Candidate Joe O'Neal, because he stated evidence of his service record, unlike his opponent Candidate Barry Smithers, because he says he has a vision for success that his opponent lacks Candidate Joe O'Neal, because he believes in creating more jobs, in contrast to his opponent

Read the excerpts from different sections “The Scarlet Ibis.” Although Doodle learned to crawl, he showed no signs of walking, but he wasn’t idle. He talked so much that we all quit listening to what he said. It was about this time that Daddy built him a go-cart and I had to pull him around. At first I just paraded him up and down the piazza, but then he started crying to be taken out into the yard and it ended up by my having to lug him wherever I went. If I so much as picked up my cap, he’d start crying to go with me and Mama would call from wherever she was, “Take Doodle with you.” *** He’d nod his head, and I’d say, “Well, if you don’t keep trying, you’ll never learn.” Then I’d paint for him a picture of us as old men, white-haired, him with a long white beard and me still pulling him around in the go-cart. This never failed to make him try again. Based on these excerpts, what best describes the symbol of the go-cart within the story? It changes from a symbol of youth to a symbol of old age. It changes from a symbol of success to a symbol of failure. It changes from a symbol of hope to a symbol of desperation. It changes from a symbol of freedom to a symbol of captivity.

Looking back, why do people believe the Beatles were such a massive success in the United States, changing pop music forever?

[ad_1]

This sounds like an essay question, i’ll give you some possible points and quotations, maybe some ideas on context, but it’s up to you to develop your own thesis and opinion on this.

f. scot fitzgerald critiques the idea of the american dream (like many other classic authors) through the situations of the characters.

jay gatsby is able to aquire an enormous amount of wealth throughout his life, but he is unable to penetrate the upper class. he ends up being killed after tangling in that crowd for too long

possibly mention the context of the 20s. a tumultuous time following WW1, increase in immigration as well as womens rights and the massive economic boom. (with the crash looming in 1929) there was a belief that anyone could ‘strike it rich’ like gatsby did.

george and myrtle wilson were middle class people looking to improve their life, and achieve the american dream

daisy is the ultimate, perfect example of the american dream.

the darkest secret at the end, gatsby’s wealth didn’t come from work, it came from a life of crime. fitzgerald is basically saying american dream is actually a lost promise.

also underlying greed strewn throughout the novel, and affairs which tear couples apart.

quote:
‘But I didn’t call to him for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone–he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward–and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.’

very key symbol of the green light, and gatsby reaching out to something (the american dream) that he cannot aquire.

hope that helps 🙂 feel free to disagree and develop your own opinions on this subject.

if you want more info, there are plenty of articles full of quotes, examples and ideas on the internet. reading critical perspectives of the great gatsby are also good if you’re willing to look 😀

The Reformation actually started after Columbus’s landing in North America.

Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 was forced on Spain and Portugal by the Pope. The Pope basically said that all lands in the New World belonged to Spain and all new non-Christian lands in the Eastern Hemisphere belong to Portugal. No other Catholic countries can do anything in those areas without the approval of the owner.

The pope basically drew two lines on the globe setting the border. The western line started at the north pole cut half way through Greenland and ended at the south pole. The new world was everything to the west. Problem is that it ran through a chunk of Brazil which is why Brazil is an ex-Portuguese colony.

The Eastern line starts at the North Pole runs through siberia, through the pacific just west of Japan, and cuts Australia in half. Of course, Australia hadn’t been discovered yet. Everything to the the east of this line is the new world.

Obviously, this treaty didn’t hold up well, but the reformation gave the protestant countries an excuse to explore the new world since they didn’t have to take orders from the Pope. Even so, France, a catholic country, ignored it too.

Really, the only country that was effected by the reformation in the exploration of the Americas was England. All the other countries, changed their religion once and then went to war with the nearest catholic country. Sweden became Lutheran and stayed that way. The Dutch Republic became Calvinists and stayed that way.

England kept switching. First it was Catholic. Then, Henry VIII made it protestant. Then, Henry’s daughter Mary I made it catholic again. Henry’s other daughter Elizabeth I (with the two hit movies) made it Protestant again.

Years latter, Oliver Cromwell over through the monarchy, executed the King Charles I, and established a Protestant fundamentalist religious military dictatorship. He outlawed drinking, smoking, gambling, theater, dirty books, sports, prostitution, and anything generally fun. He would have made Saudi Arabia proud. Basically, all you could do is work, pray, and die. Sex was allowed for creating children, but you couldn’t enjoy it.

When Cromwell died, the people of England said enough was enough and brought back the King. Charles II kicked out the fundamentalists and brought back drinking, smoking, gambling, dirty books, sports, prostitution, and having fun during sex. Incidentally, those were also all his hobbies.

This brings us to the famous Pilgrims. They were part of Cromwell’s crowd. They kept agitating a return to the no-fun policy. They annoyed everybody. They weren’t persecuted for practicing their religion, they were persecuted because they kept trying to force their religion on everyone else. Sort of like Southern Baptists.

Charles II was the most easy going monarch in British history. Do realize how annoying you have to be to get him to throw you out.

Charles’s brother James II was obsessed with turning Great Britain catholic again. After four years of trying, they kicked him and his followers out.

Jim enjoys playing basketball. he figures that he makes about 50% of the field goals he attempts during a game. in this situation, we’ll say success occurs when jim makes an attempted field goal. what is the value of p?

[ad_1]

The following equation of parabola is given:

p(x)= – 5 x^2 + 240 x – 2475

where p(x) = y

This is a standard form of the parabola. We need to
convert this into vertex form of equation. The equation must be in the form:

y – k = a (x – h)^2

Where h and k are the vertex of the parabola. Therefore,

y = – 5 x^2 + 240 x – 2475

y = -5 (x^2 – 48 x + 495)

Completing the square:

y = -5 (x^2 – 48 x + 495 + _) – (-5)* _

Where the value in the blank _ is = -b/2

Since b = -48        therefore,

y = -5 (x^2 – 48 x + 495 + 81) + 405

y – 405 = -5 (x^2 – 48 x + 576)

y – 405 = -5 (x – 24)^2

Therefore the vertex is at points (24, 405).

The company should make 24 tables per day to attain maximum
profit.

In a binomial experiment the probability of success is 0.06. What is the probability of two successes in seven trials? a. 0.0554

[ad_1]

Twenty-three percent of students are from out of state.  In a random sample of 6 students, what is the probability that at least 2 of them are from out of state?
This is a case of binomial probability, as “success” would be “student is from out of state” and “failure” would be “student is not from out of state.”
The probability, p, that a student is from out of state is 0.23.  The number of experiments is n = 6.

The probability that 0 students is/are from out of state is  binompdf(6, 0.23, 0), which, according to the binompdf( function of my TI-83 Plus calculator, is 0.2084.  Similarly, the prob. that 1 student is from out of state is

binompdf(6, 0.23, 1), or 0.3735.  Adding these two probabilities together, we get 0.5819.  This represents the probability that 0 or 1 student is from out of state.

To find the prob. that 2 or more are from out of state, subtract this 0.5819 from 1.0000.  The correct result is 0.4181.  This makes use of the “complement” property of probability.  It’s easier to calculate the prob. that 0 or 1 student is from out of state, as we have done here, and then subtract the result from 1, than it is to calculate the five probabilities

binompdf(6, 0.23, 2), binompdf(6, 0.23, 3), binompdf(6, 0.23, 4), binompdf(6, 0.23, 5) and binompdf(6, 0.23, 6) and add them together.

What is the great success that maozedong has?

[ad_1]

1- The correct answer is B, as one result of the Great Society was that the lives of many underprivileged Americans improved.

The Great Society was a set of US national reform programs announced by President Lyndon B. Johnson for the first time in a speech at Ohio University on May 7, 1964 and more fully illustrated on May 22, 1964 at the University of Michigan. These reform programs were subsequently presented to the Congress of the United States and largely approved during the 1960s, thanks to the consent of its supporters of the Democratic Party.

Two main goals of social reforms were the elimination of poverty and racial injustice. During this period new large spending programs were launched in the fields of education, medical care, urban problems and transport. Johnson’s “Great Society” was linked, in its objectives and policies, to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal program.

Some proposals of the Great Society resumed initiatives contained in the New Frontier program, interrupted by the tragic death of President John F. Kennedy. Johnson’s success in promoting and endorsing his reforms depended on his considerable congressional political influence, his persuasion, and the favorable historical circumstances resulting from the 1964 presidential elections, which allowed the Democratic Party to dominate Congress and to elect the House of Representatives with the largest number of exponents of the liberal current since 1938.

The evolution of the Vietnam war and the massive involvement of the American military machine in the conflict, however, partly undermined the success of the “Great Society” program. Growing, huge expenditures for the continuation of the war made more difficult to finance the reform programs. Representatives of the Democratic Party against the war in Vietnam complained that military spending decisively stifled the Great Society program. On the whole, however, despite growing political and economic difficulties, which forced the administration to eliminate or reduce the financing of some projects, President Johnson managed to activate a series of programs of great importance, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Older Americans Act and the federal education funding, which are still active.

2- The correct answer is C, as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was necessary because the previous existing American immigration policies were discriminatory.

On October 3, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the law into effect, saying: “The [old] system violates the basic principle of American democracy, the principle according to which the valuation and reward of each man should be established on the basis of his merits as a man. It has been anti-American in the highest sense, because it has been unfaithful to the faith that led thousands to these shores, even before we were a country. ”

Yes. It is a fact that the genes that I have are also found in the genes of my 5 nephews. Thus, if a situation calls for me to choose, it is alright to sacrifice my life taking that there is a higher percentage of survival of my nephews passing on the genes to the future. For instance, in a sinking boat scenario, the boat can only hold up to 5 people and we are 6 in the boat at that moment. In the kin selection, I will be willing to sacrifice myself for my 5 nephews to survive. This is for the greater good and even if my existence would perish, I have 5 individuals carrying my genes which would continue to survive.

Which of the following was not a contributing factor to the success of early rulers of the Shang Dynasty?

[ad_1]

Answer:

The answer to this question is difficult and there are many factors that must be taken into account, in order to pinpoint three specific factors. There have been military and political conflicts that led to a rise in terrorism in the 21st century, but these are specific to terrorism from and in the Middle East, like are the Invasion of Afghanistan, the War on Terror with the Invasion of Iraq after 9/11, and the rise to power of radical terrorist regimes like the Taliban, among others. However, I would say that the three leading factors that have led to a rise in terrorism worldwide, and not just from and in the Middle East, would be:

1. Religious hatred: Fanaticism and radicalism in religious beliefs, as well as the intolerance towards religious differences has led to an increment in world-wide terrorism.

2. Political differences and intolerance: Especially in countries like those in Africa, and also in the Middle East, this factor has shown how political intolerance leads to further terrorism, as people seek to fight that which is different, and especially when they are outpowered, through terror attacks and strategies. An example is the massacres that have taken place in Africa between leading groups and those out of power.

3. Corruption: Corruption and poverty are also factors because they have fed fanatical viewpoints and actions. In the desire to fight off fanatical regimes, and corrupted governments, both nationally and internationally, people have resorted to terror, especially to fight off powerful regimes, and nations.

At the turn of the 21st century, all these factors generated a chain reaction that led to such events as the 9/11 attacks, and others around the world.

He theoretical new force that may be causing an increase in the speed of the universe’s expansion is called _____.

DARK ENERGY.It is called Dark Energy and is different than Dark Matter (which is around galaxies). Dark energy is mostly described by a non-zero cosmological constant. This takes some history. When Einstein came up with his equations for gravity, he realized that they did not allow a static universe. This was a problem for him philosophically, so he added another term to his basic equations. This term had a constant part which is called the cosmological constant. Einstein showed that a particular value for this constant allowed a static universe. When the expansion of the universe was discovered by Hubble, Einstein called the constant ‘his greatest mistake’. For decades after this, Einstein’s original equations were used instead of the modified ones with the constant. Now fast forward to a couple of years ago. It was found that the expansion rate is actually accelerating. This can be explained by having a non-zero cosmological constant.

Amazon Inc.

Introduction

Amazon is an American multinational company, which was incorporated in 1994, by Jeff Bezos. Company in July 1995, sold the first book through Amazon.com. Amazon serves worldwide. Amazon has retail in United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Ireland, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Spain, Netherlands, India, Mexico etc. They also do international shipping in many countries. Amazon is working on best strategies in the market, as they have analyzed the marketplace. They are spotting or focusing on Business-to-consumer relationship; they have realized the values of customers and focused on the business-to-business and consumer-to-business relationship. They are facilitating the customers across the world by providing the products of their choice; however though, they are earning commission all the way through sales and focused on building the entire websites which are based on the Amazon platform.

Amazon Make Sensible Choices In Emerging Markets Entry Strategies

Amazon has always focused on its strategies; the company is well aware about the market condition and knows how to target market or potential customers. However, on June 5, 2013, Amazon has entered the market of India and launches its products, 10 before they have entered in the market of China because they know that customers are more willing to buy products there. The strategies were effective. The mode to entering in India have the various competitive strategies example Amazon is the first e-tailor which has entered in the Indian market, they have managed new logistic system at that time and they have offered multiple strategies including sales and incentive so they customers can be motivated to buy the products. Amazon has made the correct decision to enter the Indian market, because over next decade the industry has grown about 61% (Feierman, 2015).

Amazon Selling Success Ideas

The previous entries of Amazon before India were in China and Brazil, where they have also focused on the various strategies and get success in the market. Amazon has started its business in Brazil and in 2012 the market was expected to grow, Amazon decision was good to enter in the market of Brazil because it is one of the largest emerging market of the world, the population of Brazil have access to internet and mobiles, However, Amazon has also faced problems in Brazil due to poor economic conditions as the complicated consumption of tax system and some other factors which restrict them from development.

Amazon has faced the China as a largest e-commerce market, to entering in the China market was the correct decision for the Amazon, as in past 10 years Amazon has earned profit there by considering the investment plans. The mode of the entry was wrong they have used name Joyo under them, in the early stage. However, in 2011 the market of Amazon has loss the brand advantages and the customers of small cities were neglected. There is much competition for the Amazon in the China market, because Chinese people know how they can give competition to Amazon, still Amazon gained a successful name in China and response perfectly to its competitors.

Risks And Rewards For Early And Late Movers

Both early and late mover can face the problems or disadvantages and advantages in the market, but there are more benefits which could be seen as an early mover because there are maximum opportunities for the early mover in the market. Example they can set the prices according to their choices, there are advantages over new or potential competitors however, and late movers can face the disadvantages in the market and can face losses in the starting.

Early movers may also face lot of problems or challenges when they start business, there may be losses because people are not aware of them, the company as an early mover has to suffer the full cycles regarding the development and research. The research could be costly, there are risks in entering the market because analysis is difficult to do that the firms or people will accept the products or not. There could be problems regarding the R&D or technology, because it is difficult to assess that in the country you are going to start business have the appropriate sources or technology or not. First mover need to educate the people through different marketing strategies, so the people could be aware of the brand and buy the products, moreover, there are lot of efforts which early mover have to be consider, while entering.

There are rewards for the early mover’s example they can create new product for the people of that country and can introduce new technology which can be interesting for the consumers. The first mover if assess the market properly and give the quality products to the customers and if customer are satisfied there could be long-term relationships of the brand or firm with the consumers because customers if enjoy the product they can be loyal (Dashwood, 2012).

There are also rewards for the late movers in the market, as they don’t have to spend much money on the R&D and the market already know about the product, they can learn from already existing business in the markets that what could be the risks and what could be the success, there are minimal risks. The risks could be as they have already ell-know competitors in the market and people may not accept them, may their product fails. Example could be given of Amazon, as there were competitors of Amazon in the China, the company has to face downfall (Cohan, 2013).

Companies And Investors Measure Success In Emerging Markets

It is needed to measure the success in the market before investing, especially in the developing countries like India, Brazil because there are lacks of resources. While, in the developed countries like US, where there is fast economic growth, the risks are less. If the companies or investors analysis the market situation and then do investment accordingly with the requirement of time there could be more benefits and chances of growth in the future.

The companies can assess the market before starting business processes or investing like they can be ambitious but realistic, they do need to keep their expectations too high, before entering they can target the market and can know about the potential customers, if they do not have the potential customers in the market then they should not invest. There is need to draw the conclusion, the modes of entry should be based on license and franchise, joint venture, export etc. The companies need to do analysis from all the aspects, so problems could not be there in future.

Entry timing and firm size are important to understand, entry timing should be effective, and it could be then, when there is less or no competitor in the market. There is need to know the economic and cultural differences where the business is going to be done. The strategies need to made according to the market and customers, example, the price of product cannot be decide higher or expensive if the economy is poor, people will not buy the products and there could be chances of failure (TABAKA, 2016).

Country economy grow with the help of both the national and multinational companies, for the developing countries multinational companies can play an important role, as people can get appropriate and good quality products, company economy can also grow and market can become more competitive. Such competition is important for the country growth, in the market. However, in this case, home countries need to strength their selves so that more profitability can be generated and country can be more successful.

In order to gain the competitive advantages from the multinational companies, home companies need to strengthen their strategies and need to learn from the international businesses. Example they can provide the customize services to their customers, or can give the products according to the consumer preferences. May they international or multinational entrants have did deep analysis of your market and home business failed to assess the condition, based on this reason market analysis should be done. However, like Amazon; the company is serving across the countries and has restricted the growth of home companies. In this way, home companies can design a business model which is better than Amazon and can finish the obstacles. Innovative strategies and latest technologies can be focused; moreover, there is need to invest on the talent and maintain the staff (Vanston & Vanston, 2011).

Amazon Enter Additional Emerging Markets

Amazon is already a key player in the market, Amazon still needs to enter in the additional emerging market, so Amazon could have power and influence in the world. There is need to recognize the importance of big emerging markets. In developing countries where Amazon is currently operating, there it could start new business process, example in the field mobile phones. Amazon is the recognizable brand, it can make own cell phone to serve the customer, there can be innovations regarding different technologies.

Amazon can do great achievement in the various businesses; most beneficial will be business of technology, android Smartphone can be focused. There could be partnership with the various Smartphone industries or business including Apple, Samsung, and HTC etc. New or modern applications or software can be focused, so the customers can be attracted, however, new window phones can also give advantages to the company. They need to avoid the competition, based on prices. They can find differentiated strategies or application that can give them success in the market.

Conclusion

Through the analysis of the current situation of the Amazon in the market, it comes to know that company is focused in the strategies, so they could give the best services across the countries; the company is focused on emerging its business in the new markets and countries. However, company can focus on the new strategies or product that can give benefits to the company and can retain the clients.
